Luminous Latitudes

Luminous Latitudes

I call this series Luminous Latitudes because all of these images were made in the tropics where the light can be very intense and the foliage and landscapes quite different from our New England environment.

All of the images in this show are infrared photographs. I always found infrared photography to be an intriguing and sometimes quirky medium to work with. Unlike traditional black and white or color photography, infrared photography only records a portion of the light spectrum that is actually invisible to our eyes, because of this, it has its own aesthetic.

This selection of photographs is a bit different from what I have exhibited in the past. They were made with a digital camera whose sensor was converted to only record infrared light. I then digitally manipulated the raw images in Photoshop to render a color palette that is of my own choosing.

Local Artist Rachel Jenkins

Most often I work in acrylics but I also sketch with pencil, charcoal, and oil pencils.
I began to take drawing, color theory and painting classes in 2017 at the Hill Institute a year after I retired. Since then I have had individual art classes with Whitney Robbins almost weekly in Greenfield.

When I wrote poems I would use metaphors as a way to start writing.
Since I have been painting I feel compelled by color and very often peoples faces and the story they tell.

As in my work, in cities, and on buses etc. I am always drawn to people, curious about their histories, their stories and how they represent themselves in words, language, clothes and in every other way.

An evening out with Singer & Songwriter Scott Meyers

We're so happy to host singer-songwriter Scott Meyers again in our shop for Northampton Arts Night Out. He’ll be playing songs from his three studio albums as well as a few covers.

Scott’s third studio album, Pirates on the Moon, was released in April 2021, recorded at home and right through the heart of the pandemic.

Some time before, in 2009, Scott released his debut album Old Radio, featuring such fan-favorites as "Side of the Road,” “15 Minute Movie,” and “A Song is a Song.”

It was followed by Mysteries of the Night - EP (2014), a four-song, spare acoustic lullaby for his two kids.

Raised in Los Angeles, and by way of San Francisco, Boston and NYC, Scott has since settled with his family, and their dog Sally, right here in Northampton.

Holiday Market @ 9 Market

Jo has invited some of her favorite artisans to participate in a Holiday Market. Come see the beautiful crafts, jewelry, pottery, furniture and art and give your loved one a one of a kind gift this season!

Who will be there…

Jen Dieringer of Reclaimed Crafts

Jen Dieringer of Reclaimed crafts is a Northampton-based maker who repurposes vintage + salvaged objects -- sourced at flea markets, tag sales and roadside free piles -- into functional art. https://www.reclaimedcraftsnorthampton.com/.

Annie Bowe-Jewelry

Annie Bowe is a southern Maine artist who has studied and experimented with many forms of art. She recently fell in love with making jewelry for its quick, tangible and meditative process. Sharing her love for jewelry and seeing her pieces worn on her loved ones has sparked a lot of inspiration and joy. Often spending hours hunting for the most unique or vibrant gemstone beads, Annie is excited to continue spreading the joy and helping others discover their own personal styles with pieces that look good on everyone. And a fun tidbit - Annie is Jo Smith’s niece! Follow along on Instagram @anniebowesart https://www.instagram.com/anniebowesart?igsh=bGJieTIwanFsbXVv

Maya Machin-Pottery

Maya is a well known local potter who lives and works in Ashfield, MA. Her beautiful pottery has been loved by many for years. Jo is thrilled to host Maya at the show in December. https://www.mayamachinpottery.com/

Connie Gemmer-Uphostered Furniture and Fiber Art

Connie Gemmer’s creative palette is her home and her garden where she gets wrapped up in bold colors of cotton and linen, rich silks, intricate tapestries and the many textures of her garden. Her love for these flowers and fibers has inspired her to knit and sew her own designs and create pieces which warm up a home or delightfully punctuate a room. Recently, she has been finding beautiful yet discarded furniture which she transforms. For this show, she is using custom made fabric from her sister’s (Jo Smith) paintings.

GREATBOXERS & Nitemare Before Christmas Tattoo Flash Event

GREATBOXERS:

George Spencer’s depictions of boxers belong to an old tradition of painting fighters in action. However, the aestitics in Greatboxers is the stillness of readiness or aftermath. In these frontal portraits, upward-facing gloves dominate the picture space, simultaneously shielding the body and occupying the most central and significant area of the canvas. Gloves, faces, body fill the paintings with an ambiguity that could indicate triumph or defeat. The lines of paint, dripping in long verticalities and downward trajectory, are reminiscent of traces of blood or sweat. The excess of paint and the volatility of brushstrokes reveal a superfluity of movement but also a stillness containing the fighter’s readiness for combat or retreat. The frame confines these dialectic forces of life, beauty, death and form. - Rawi| Hage

Kim Carlino | Strategic Horizons

Kim Carlino’s art is based in geometric abstraction and rooted in the historical language of 20th-century abstraction exploring issues of color, form, flatness, and pattern while juxtaposing abstracted forms from nature and the environment around us to create works that find harmony in the tension of contrasting elements. It is adaptable and improvisational, as it explores optical playfulness and spatial dimensionality through color, fluid organic forms, and geometric patterning.

The Glass Canvas with Momo Glasswords

Please help us welcome Edo and Rosario of Momo Glassworks for a Truck Show - The Glass Canvas.

2 Artists, 2 Techniques: Edo and Rosario met while traveling in Spain and have been creatively collaborating ever since. Inspired by their abundant travels together, they labored long and hard to develop and perfect their glass fusion technique. Each piece is hand painted, with metal and mineral inclusions, and kiln fired to create tiny masterpieces.

“The process became a kind of mixed media collage, with glass as canvas, the kiln as vessel, and heat as maker of worlds.”

Momo will be with us in the store with us for a trunk show and will be available to talk about their process and their artistic journey so far.

The Works of Eric Payne & Nancy Meagher

Eric Payne:

I was born and lived in Northern California until my parents moved to Western Mass when I was 14. I’ve been here ever since with a few years here and there back west.

I have always been involved with art and music and come from a family that participated and encouraged both.

I started painting seriously when I was in my thirties and have continued this passion. Though I have never taken art classes I have been greatly inspired and taught by my sister Emily Payne and my sister in law Kate Blakeslee, not to mention countless friends along the way.

Over the last 6 years I have taken four cross-country motorcycle trips in and around the month of September. I have been greatly inspired by these trips and the landscapes I’ve been through especially Montana, Nebraska and Nevada.

Nancy Meagher:

I have vivid memories of being three years old and discovering how to make purple using a red and a blue crayon. In third grade I entered a town art fair in Winchester, MA and won third prize. Having my photo taken wearing my red silk- prize ribbon helped me to understand myself. I spent hours in my basement studio working quietly as a child.

I’ve created art all my life, and now that I’m retired, I have been working full-time on a variety of art and writing projects. The story of “Millicent and the Day it Rained Buttons” was the fruition of six years of hard work.

An evening with author and devotee of esoteric practice, Shea Bilé

By Horn, Hoof, and Crown: An Introduction to Satanism, Luciferianism, and the Left Hand Path.

In this lecture, Shea Bilé will provide a glimpse into the multifaceted realm of the Satanism, Lucifierianism, and the Left Hand Path, elucidating on the diverse tapestry of spiritual traditions and ideologies they have engendered. This discourse will delve into the historical roots of religious Satanism and the Left Hand Path and unravel its present-day manifestations - often misunderstood systems of belief and ritual practices. We will explore the myriad perspectives of Satanic traditions such as the Temple of Set, the Church of Satan, The Satanic Temple, Anti-Cosmic Satanism, Gnostic Satanism/Luciferianism, and others; furthermore, Shea Bilé will shed light on his own personal religious work and praxis, offering a unique insight into a self-styled and independent Satanic path of devotion. These traditions, each in its own way, are built upon the foundational principles of radical freedom and religious transgression - a black flame that sets alight the heart of the Left Hand Path.

Shea Bilé is an author, lecturer, musician, performance artist, and podcast host. A researcher and devotee of esoteric practice for nearly 25 years, his committed adherence to subversive forms of spiritual expression has served as a vital foundation for his work. He has delivered lectures and workshops internationally, with a focus on Left Hand Path occultism and religious heterodoxy, and has served as both a visiting professor and a guest lecturer at various universities. His writings have appeared in numerous print and digital publications, his most recent treatise being, "Friedrich Nietzsche and the Left Hand Path," a book of occult philosophy published by Atramentous Press in 2023. His forthcoming work, "Hymns of the Red Dragon," a daemonic hymnal, is to be published by Theion Publishing.

During the global pandemic, these artists started a peer-to-peer group sharing a "photo a day" project to stay connected. They took and shared daily photos on Instagram, which improved their photography skills and helped them notice and appreciate the beauty in everyday life. Whether in their hometown or exploring new places, the project encouraged them to pay closer attention to the wonders around them.

Continue to the lower level of the Split Level Gallery to see Home, Freedom, Beauty by Adeyemi Adebayo. The work explores the themes of home, beauty, and freedom through the lens of solitude, disposition, and the longing for home. Join us for a special, intimate concert with Gia Greene - vocalist and multi-instrumentalist from Boston, Massachusetts. Trained in both classical and jazz vocals, she graduated from Berklee College of Music. When she isn’t writing and performing her original music, Gia sings with Chorus pro Musica, Medford Community Choir, and plays bass and sings with her cover band, Mixed G.

Gia’s debut full length album, Unexpected Guest, showcases her unique song writing style in a powerful full band setting. Hazy guitar tones and dissonant melodies create a haunting atmosphere while Gia’s voice soars above as a ray of light in an otherwise dark soundscape.

Her upcoming album, Hexafoil, is a song cycle about benefic and malefic plants and is inspired by occult literature of the late middle ages, as well as Gia’s personal experience with these plants in her magical workings.
