Animal Portraits by Dan Chiamis, Renee Hill, & Sarah Marquesen

SARAH MARQUESEN: For the Love of Animals

In her realistic paintings, Sarah tries to capture the personality and soul of both domestic and wild animals.

DAN CHIAMIS: Once Upon A Time At The Zoo

One day we may look back at zoos and marvel at their barbarity or be grateful for the species they saved from extinction. My hope is that the work on exhibit speaks to both sides of this conversation without prejudice.

RENEE HILL: Colors of the Seasons

Renee is a macro photographer from Easthampton. Her favorite subjects are the tiny creatures that are often unseen – spiders, bugs, frogs and other amphibians.

Jeanne Henry Hoose

After finishing my undergraduate degree allowing me to teach English, my new best friend was the middle school art teacher down the hall. Through that relationship, and some adult education classes, I learned that I loved to draw. Life carries you in different directions. Marriage, 2 sons, and a career as a special education teacher was my focus for a long time. I retired in 2015 and, with the help of some terrific teachers, I am happy to be able to return to drawing and begin to paint.

HELICES: a spiraling journey of provocation and mutation

Creators Binda Colebrook, Jenny Katz, and Dale Rawlinson describe HELICES as a “mutagenic” process, designed to spark creative aliveness. In a series of 11 movements, one artist’s output became the other artist’s inspiration, sometimes literal, sometimes loose. This double-helix pattern of provocation and response grew into a complex web of intermeaning, thick with references and a growing language of shared symbols. (The name of the project — the plural of "helix" — references the twining, co-evolutionary nature of the work.) The exhibition of HELICES — Movement 12 of the project — includes 2D and 3D visual art, writing and songwriting, sculptural fire-building, music production, and videography.

An Evening with Scott Meyers: Singer-Songwriter

Join us for Arts Night Out Northampton as we present singer-songwriter Scott Meyers. He’ll be playing songs from his three studio albums (and a few covers).

Scott’s third studio album, Pirates on the Moon, was released in April 2021, recorded at home and right through the heart of the pandemic.

Some time before, in 2009, Scott released his debut album Old Radio, featuring such fan-favorites as "Side of the Road,” “15 Minute Movie,” and “A Song is a Song.”

It was followed by Mysteries of the Night - EP (2014), a four-song, spare acoustic lullaby for his two kids.

Raised in Los Angeles, and by way of San Francisco, Boston and NYC, Scott has since settled with his family, and their dog Sally, right here in Northampton.

Of Spirit: Lena Mac + Rae Heller

Of Spirit: Lena Mac + Rae Heller

Lena Mac’s work explores states of mindfulness, healing and the divine feminine. Combining figurative symbols with abstracted forms, she creates metaphorical spaces that contemplate the spiritual and mysterious aspects of the world around us and our place within it.

Rae Heller makes large scale quilts that hold the immense pain and paradoxical aliveness of grief. Rae grieves the loss of a friend, processes the decision of motherhood, and celebrates the joy of being alive through quilt making. Celebrating life and processing death is held in the durable softness of quilts.

Come see these two artists' works in dialogue. Lena and Rae’s creative practices are spiritual, and ultimately, the work created is of spirit.

Girl in a Bear Suit: A Poetry Reading with Jen Jabaily-Blackburn

Join us and local poet Jen Jabaily-Blackburn as she reads from her latest book of poetry Girl in a Bear Suit-winner of the Elixir Press Annual Poetry Award. Contest judge Christopher Citro had this to say about it: “As I turned each page, it kept happening, another poem, another starling came in to roost next to my heart, adding its small but powerful flutter to the whirling filling me delightfully. I started to feel less afraid that it would stop, that the wonderment would be short-lived, and instead began to trust this book. I began to trust Jen, the poet, who'd created these poems. She knows what she's doing, and what she's doing is making art with every line, with every poem, with the whole journey this book takes you on from start to finish.”
